chart showing hcg levels over time

What is the best time to test for pregnancy?

It’s best to test in the morning

If you’re looking for the best time of day, then it’s generally best to test in the early morning when you first go to the bathroom. This is because hCG levels tend to be higher, and you’re more likely to see a positive pregnancy test result. You can still take a pregnancy test in the afternoon or evening, but you are more likely to see a false-negative.

It’s best to test after your missed period

It is generally best to test after your missed period, as this will help eliminate false negatives and false positives (from early miscarriages, which are quite common).

You can test before your missed period, as some pregnancy tests are designed to do this, but the accuracy will be lesser.

So what about those early pregnancy tests..?

Early detection pregnancy tests assume a 14-day luteal phase, which is the time between ovulation and when you get your period. The issue is that you may have a longer or shorter luteal phase than normal.

If you have a shorter luteal phase then you have a higher chance of seeing a negative result.

If you have a longer luteal phase then you’re more likely to see an accurate result.
